Government must arbitrate a solution if there is no agreement between apps and workers – 09/24/2023 – Panel

The government is already preparing to arbitrate a solution for app-based labor regulation if companies and workers do not reach an agreement by the 30th, when the group created to discuss the issue is expected to conclude.
According to the decree that established the GT, dated May 1st, government representatives, companies and workers would have 150 days, extendable for the same period, to come up with a proposal to regulate work mediated by applications.
The government’s intention is not to extend the deadline, considering that this would only prolong a discussion that, until now, has shown little possibility of conciliation.
The biggest problem is the negotiation between apps and delivery people. The companies made a proposal to pay R$17 per hour worked, but drivers are pressing for the hours logged into the app to be counted.
Minister Luiz Marinho (Labor) has already publicly criticized the conditions imposed by companies on workers. In April, during a hearing in the Chamber of Deputies, he said that “to say that it is legal for a worker to have to work 16 hours a day in traffic to be able to take something home to support his children, this borders on slave labor due to the excess journey.”
