Government leader defends failure to meet fiscal target in 2024

During the PT Electoral Conference for 2024, held in Brasília, this Saturday (9), the government leader in the Chamber, deputy José Guimarães (PT-CE), defended non-compliance with the fiscal target – proposed by the government itself – if this guarantees PT’s success in next year’s municipal elections.

“I was talking to the president (of the PT) Gleisi (Hoffmann) who, if I have to do deficit, we’re going to have to do it. Otherwise we won’t win the election in 2024. It’s clear that the Lula government has fiscal responsibility, but we have a problem”, stated Guimarães.

The speech is in the same line as what is defended by the president of the PT, deputy Gleisi Hoffmann, who at the same event spoke of “a deficit of 1%, 2% in GDP”.

Even with the government’s decision to maintain the fiscal target of deficit zero for 2024, a wing of the PT has been differing from the author of the proposal, the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad.

In his speech at the Conference, President Lula (PT) complained about the PT’s internal fights, called for the militancy to return to the working formula at the beginning of the party’s formation – when the PT members did not have the financial support of businessmen – and said that the party “could achieve an extraordinary victory in the municipal elections”.

At the same event, deputy Gleisi Hoffmann incited PT militancy against supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

“We defeated Bolsonaro, but we still have to defeat Bolsonarism”, said Gleisi when speaking at the opening of the Conference.

The PT president also accused the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, of “sabotaging the country”; she criticized the “conservative forces” in Congress that “exert disproportionate influence on the Legislative and even the Executive”; and said that militancy needs to strengthen itself on social media to combat the advance of the right.
