Government criticizes photo of Lula published by Folha – 01/19/2023 – Politics

The Secretariat for Social Communication of the Presidency of the Republic issued a note in which it classifies as “lamentable” the photo of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) taken using the multiple exposure technique and which was published by Sheet on Wednesday (18) and reproduced on the front page of the newspaper printed on this Thursday (19).

“It is unfortunate that the newspaper Sheet of São Paulo produced and broadcast a non-journalistic image suggesting violence against the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in the context of the anti-democratic acts of January 8. It is a montage, as it does not portray any moment that happened”, states the text.

The multiple exposure technique is a resource widely used in photojournalism and consists of superimposing images on the same frame, without further editing and done in the camera itself. The prerequisite for using it is to explain the procedure for producing the image in the caption, which was done by Sheet.

The photo was taken at an event between Lula and trade unionists at the Planalto Palace on Wednesday (18) and shows one of the windows that was broken during the invasion and depredation of the headquarters of the three Powers by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) .

The image was published alongside the newspaper’s headline about the large presence of military personnel in the palace. The PT has already stated that he believes that those responsible for security at the site were colluding with the January 8 invasion.
