Before 2023 leaves the scene, there was still time for an important award to take place in the beer sector. At the beginning of the month, in São Paulo, the final of the 3rd Copa Cerveja Brasil chose the three best labels in the country, and the winner was the surprising Cold Brew Lager, from the Colombina brewery, in Aparecida de Goiânia (GO).

Unlike other national competitions with fixed headquarters (and which usually bring more localized results), the Copa Cerveja Brasil —promoted by Abracerva and with the support of Sindicerv and Febracerva— held regional stages, determining the best of each style in the five regions of the country. country. Afterwards, the finalists were analyzed again in São Paulo.

“Throughout the entire second semester we traveled around Brazil, carrying out regional stages, defending and supporting local beer scenes, valuing the products and people of each region and working to unite the segment”, says the president of Abracerva, Gilberto Tarantino.

Cold Brew Lager was the winner of Best of Show, which determines the best label among all styles. With 4.3% alcohol and just 14 IBU (bitterness unit which, in IPAs, is between 40 and 60), the beer was made with a cold infusion of coffee, with beans selected from a special roasting by King Cafés Especiais , also from Goiânia. The result is a very refreshing beer with a strong coffee aroma.

“Cold Brew Lager brings together a lot of everything we believe and defend throughout the history of the Colombina brand, valuing regional riches and the movement of the local economy”, the brewery posted on its Instagram profile. “It is the result of a very successful partnership with King Cafés Especiais and also includes cassava in its composition, from family farming in Goiás, supplied by cooperatives in Bela Vista de Goiás”, he added.

The triumph of Cold Brew Lager was, in a way, surprising due to the fact that the label did not win Best of Show in the Central-West region stage. But she went to the final because she was selected for her style (basically, she lost Goianão to win Brasileirão).

Still in the Best of Show, in second place was Effect Pigmaleão #2, from Pineal, from Sorocaba, a saison with mixed fermentation and maturation in French oak barrels. Closing the podium was Wave, a Catharina sour with guava from Falke Bier from Minas Gerais and, who would have thought, without alcohol. All winners by style are listed on the Abracerva website.

In total, the election evaluated more than 1,100 labels from all regions, involving more than one hundred jurors in the evaluation.
