Gloria Pires says she chose her artistic name thinking about Gloria Maria: ‘We received exchanged letters’

This Thursday (2), Brazil mourned the death of journalist Gloria Maria. Several people left their tribute to the presenter and one of them was actress Gloria Pires. The artist said on Instagram that, when she chose her stage name, she chose the last name Pires so as not to be confused with the communicator.

“When I needed to define my stage name, Gloria Maria was already shining on the TV Globo screen and because I was also Gloria Maria, I decided to use my last name, so there was no confusion, but it was no use… that we received, exchanged. Her smile, her intelligence and her charisma will always be with us. My condolences to the daughters, family, friends and fans of this incredible woman. Rest in peace, Xará!”

The journalist and presenter Gloria Maria was hospitalized at the Copa Star Hospital, in the South Zone of Rio, being treated for cancer. In mid-2022, she started treatment after brain metastases, but unfortunately, it stopped working in the last few days. Gloria is survived by two daughters, Maria and Laura.

The journalist had been away from “Globo reporter” for more than three months, due to the treatment. The last program presented by her was the edition of August 5, 2022. She had worked at “Globo reporter” for 12 years.

In a statement, Rede Globo reported: “In 2019, Gloria was diagnosed with lung cancer, successfully treated with immunotherapy, and brain metastasis, treated surgically, also initially successful. In the middle of last year, the journalist started a new phase of the treatment to fight new brain metastases which, unfortunately, stopped having effect in the last few days”. In 2019, Gloria Maria underwent emergency surgery to remove a brain tumor, discovered suddenly, after fainting. After the surgery, the presenter still underwent treatment with radiotherapy and immunotherapy.

Born in Vila Isabel, in the North Zone of Rio, daughter of tailor Cosme Braga da Silva and housewife Edna Alves Matta, Gloria Maria Matta da Silva graduated in Journalism at the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC-Rio) and joined Globo as a radio -Listen to the station’s Rio section. She also became known for special articles in exotic places, having visited more than 100 countries, and participated in historical coverage such as the Malvinas War (1982), the invasion of the Brazilian embassy in Peru by a terrorist group (1996), the Olympic Games in Atlanta (1996) and the World Cup in France (1998), among others.

In 2007, alongside cinematographic reporter Lúcio Rodrigues, she broke another mark, performing the first HD transmission on Brazilian television. It was a report for “Fantástico” about the Pequi Festival, a yellow fruit revered by the Kamaiurá Indians, in the Alto Xingu.
