Global temperature breaks record in June – 06/15/2023 – Environment

The average global temperature in early June – the month in which summer begins in the northern hemisphere – recorded a record by a “substantial margin”, European observation service Copernicus said on Thursday (15).
“The world has just experienced the hottest start of June on record, after a month of May that was just 0.1°C cooler than the record for that period,” said the deputy director of the center on climate change in the statement. of Copernicus, Samantha Burgess.
The text states that the average air temperature on the surface of the planet in the first days of the month was the highest recorded and was well above the previous average. The index comes after a May in which the ocean surface temperature was also a record.
The data coincide with the onset of El Niño, a meteorological phenomenon generally associated with average global warming.
Copernicus also points out that, in early June, the planet’s average temperature temporarily exceeded pre-industrial levels by 1.5ºC. Although symbolic, as it is temporary, the index does not mean that the target of the Paris Agreement has been broken.
The text, which seeks to curb the climate crisis, stipulates that countries must reduce greenhouse gas emissions to limit the increase in global average temperature to a maximum of 2ºC —preferably, without exceeding a growth of 1.5ºC in relation to to that recorded before the Industrial Revolution.
In May, the World Meteorological Organization released a report stating that there is a 98% chance that global temperatures will reach record levels over the next five years and a 66% chance that this increase will stay above the 1.5°C target.
The Planeta em Transe project is supported by the Open Society Foundations.
