Gleisi criticizes Pacheco and says that PECs on the STF feed the “extreme right”

The national president of the PT, federal deputy Gleisi Hoffmann (PR), once again criticized the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), for discussing issues that limit the power of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). The PT member stated that these proposals are not a priority for the country and questioned the senator’s interest in defining the vote on “out of turn agendas” in Congress.

“What does Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco intend with so many untimely agendas? It was the STF’s PEC, now it’s back to talking about mandates for Supreme Court ministers and the end of re-election. Who cares about this, feeding the extreme right? The country has other priorities, such as the continuity of tax reform and many other economic agendas”, said the deputy this Saturday (2) at social network.

Last month, the Senate approved the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) 8/2021, which limits individual decisions by Court ministers. The text, which was approved by 52 votes to 18, was forwarded to the Chamber of Deputies for analysis. This Friday (1st), Pacheco reinforced that he intends to implement the PEC that establishes a fixed term of office for STF judges at the beginning of 2024.

Furthermore, the senator wants to put to a vote the proposal that foresees the end of re-election in Brazil and establishes a fixed 5-year term for president, governor and mayor. “These are two very appropriate topics to be discussed at the beginning of next year,” he said.

This is not the first time that Gleisi has tried to associate the president of the Senate with the “extreme right”. Before the vote on PEC 8/21, the parliamentarian stated that Pacheco was “doing a service for the extreme right” by discussing the issue. At the time, Pacheco countered and said that “trying to label a legislative proposal as right-wing or left-wing to disqualify it, in addition to being simplistic, is a mistake”.
