Minister Gilmar Mendes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), made a post on X (formerly Twitter) this Friday afternoon, stating that the 7th of September gained “new meaning” this year, and that “Brazil and its colors ” had been kidnapped.
“After everything that has been seen and experienced in recent times, the 7th of September takes on new meaning. The date invites us to take care of our internal independence: Brazil and its colors cannot be hijacked by any political-ideological movement”, he stated. the minister.
Gilmar also commented that the date was being used, in recent years, “to incite hatred and promote the division of the country”, and suggested that this serves the commercial interests of some groups, without determining which ones.
“The date is a celebration date and a reason to think about our national project; it could never be used to incite hatred and promote the division of the country (all financed by sectors that obviously profited from it),” he said.
Gilmar’s speech is an obvious allusion to the demonstrations that took place on September 7th in recent years in favor of Jair Bolsonaro. In May, in a speech about Operation Lava Jato, Gilmar had already demonstrated his disgust with the former president and his supporters, suggesting that they are fascists.
“Curitiba generated Bolsonaro, Curitiba has the germ of fascism”, he stated in an interview with the Roda Viva program, on TV Cultura.
