Gilmar defends Moraes’ “impartiality” in actions against Bolsonaro

The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Gilmar Mendes, defended the “impartiality” of minister Alexandre de Moraes in the trials of cases affecting former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the context of the acts of January 8th. The statement was made during an interview given to CNN Brazilthis Saturday (23).

Gilmar was questioned about the topic due to requests made by Bolsonaro’s defense for Moraes to be declared unable to judge the cases, since the minister positions himself as a victim at the same time as he acts as an investigator and judge in the cases. The view of the former president’s defense is shared by several jurists.

“It doesn’t make any sense because there is no act by Minister Alexandre that justifies this impediment or the breach of this impartiality. On the contrary, they decided to attack him because he was fulfilling an institutional task of defending institutions”, stated Gilmar.

The minister also defended the “security” of electronic voting machines and accused Bolsonaro’s entourage of trying to disrupt the 2022 elections.

On March 16, during an interview with TV 247Gilmar Mendes said that the amnesty in relation to the January 8th defendants is “unthinkable” and that the testimonies of former commanders of the Armed Forces reveal “coup intentions” by former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) after the 2022 elections.

As shown by People’s Gazettedespite the statement, the minister has already denied, in the past, that there had been an “attempted coup” during the demonstrations on January 8th.
