Ghanaian player Raphael Dwanema died this Saturday (11) after suffering a heart attack during a football match. His team, KS Egnatia Rrogozhine, was facing FK Partizani in the Albanian championship, in southeastern Europe, and his death was announced in a statement issued by the Albanian Football Federation.
“Emergency services at the stadium urgently transferred him to the hospital, where the 28-year-old player passed away,” the statement said.
Top scorer in the Albanian championship, Dwanema was formed at the Salzburg academy and was considered in 2013 one of the great hopes of Ghanaian football. He has had heart problems in the past, which prevented him from signing for English club Brighton in 2017.
The player underwent heart surgery in 2020 and had a pacemaker implanted to continue his career, which took him to play in Denmark, Austria, Switzerland. In Spain, he played for Levante during the 2018-2019 season and for Zaragoza, on loan, the following season.
“On behalf of Levante, we want to express our deepest condolences on the death of our former player, Raphael Dwamena. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time. His legacy at our club will endure forever,” he wrote on social media X the Valencian club, currently in the Second Division of Spanish football.
Dwanema’s death opened a debate in the Albanian media about whether or not the country’s federation was responsible for preventing him from playing football professionally. The federation decided to suspend all championship matches this Saturday in honor of the player.
