The German airline Lufthansa announced the launch of an initiative called “Onboard Delights Last Minute”, in which passengers have the opportunity to buy fresh products, left over because they were not sold on board, shortly before disembarking on all flights. to Frankfurt and Munich where “Onboard Delights” are offered.

At a lower price than the one charged during the flight, the traveler can take meals with him for 3.50 euros (about R$ 19), in yet another step by Lufthansa in reducing food waste, after the company already have introduced the option to pre-order these products in February this year.

For almost two years now, Lufthansa has offered its passengers on cross-border flights in Europe lasting more than one hour a variety of fresh meals, packaged snacks and beverages for purchase.

Meals are prepared daily by the catering company Gate Gourmet, and because they are deliberately prepared without coloring or preservatives, they have a short shelf life and must be discarded if not sold on designated flights.

Lufthansa Group catering concepts for less waste

The Lufthansa Group emphasizes that sustainability is one of its main priorities. Thus, on short-haul flights, the amount of food waste should be reduced by 50% by 2025 compared to 2019.

To this end, the Lufthansa Group is optimizing catering processes, offering passengers the opportunity to order meals in advance and reducing the amount of products held in standard stock.

As a result, Lufthansa says it has already managed to reduce the proportion of perishable food discarded by 45% in 2022 compared to the previous year.

The airlines Austrian, SWISS and Eurowings, belonging to the Lufthansa Group, have already been offering unsold food at reduced prices since 2022. As a result, around 80,000 food products were consumed in 2022 that would otherwise have been discarded.
