Gazeta do Povo starts campaign in defense of freedom of expression

A People’s Gazette starts, this Thursday (4), the campaign “Liberty strengthens the truth”, in defense of freedom of expression. The main objective is to make public opinion aware of the risks of attacks on freedom of expression for democracy and for Brazilians.

The initiative will have a series of resources to help reflect and find democratic solutions to the current scenario of persecution of the legitimate expression of opinion.

With the pretexts of “combating fake news” and “defending democracy”, the country has witnessed in recent years a series of abuses by different authorities against freedom of expression, previously seen only in periods of authoritarian governments such as the dictatorship. military: deputies and senators silenced; censored newspapers; people investigated without knowing the reason, without the right of defense and due process of law; prior censorship of journalistic and documentary content; between others.

These excesses, in addition to violating the fundamental rights guaranteed in the Federal Constitution, have the opposite effect of the alleged intention, preventing the reality of events from being known.

Even so, many people still don’t understand the extent of the danger.

To face this challenge, Gazeta do Povo prepared a series of didactic contents that explain the historical and cultural value of freedom of expression and what can happen if censorship is instituted:

• exclusive course taught by Guilherme Döring Cunha Pereira, CEO of Gazeta do Povo and Doctor of Law, on the historical debate on freedom of expression up to the recent controversies involving the Brazilian Judiciary;
• unpublished interviews with Rodrigo Constantino and Flávio Gordon, columnists for Gazeta do Povo who suffered reprisals from platforms and authorities for questioning the advancement of freedom in Brazil;
• free e-book with the summary of the work “About Liberty”, written by philosopher John Stuart Mill, an essential book to understand the need for freedom of expression in a free and democratic society;
