“Gay cure”: deputies ask MPF to investigate Assembly of God

Sao Paulo-SP) – Federal deputies from PSol sent, on Monday (16), a representation to the Federal Public Ministry asking that the church Assembly of God of Rio Verde, in Goiás, be investigated for the “Maanaim” retreat, which supposedly had the objective of promoting “gay cure”. The place would have been frequented by Bolsonarista influencer Karol Eller a week before she died, on October 12th.

According to the representation of Erika Hilton (SP), Luciene Cavalcante (SP) and Pastor Henrique Vieira (RJ), the retreat attempts to transform LGBTQIA+ young people into heterosexuals.

“The criminal conduct of gay cure treatment by the Defendants must be immediately stopped, as well as the victims already subjected to such violence being investigated, so that lives are preserved”,

say the parliamentarians in the document.

The parliamentarians cite posts made by Karol Eller days before her death, in which she stated that she had “converted”. Hours before falling from the 4th floor of the building where she lived, in the south of São Paulo, the influencer made a post saying that she had “lost the war”.

“The practice [da “cura gay”] it only leads to the denial of the existence of the subject, which increases cases of depression and other psychological illnesses in those who are subjected to it. This was the case of Karol Eller, who, after participating in the retreat in question, committed suicide by throwing himself from the window of his apartment, claiming to have ‘lost the war’, a likely allusion to his failure to convert to heterosexuality”,

they say.

Renunciation of sexuality

In September, the influencer, who was lesbian, had begun a process of renouncing her own sexuality, after returning from a religious retreat.

“Yes, I renounced homosexual practice, I renounced vices and I renounced the desires of my flesh to live in Christ! God bless you!”,

she had announced on social media.

Karol, third cousin of singer Cassia Eller, was 36 years old and, before becoming a digital influencer, she became an event promoter and reported what it was like to live in the United States (USA). She had more than 200,000 followers on Instagram and 700,000 on Facebook.

Four years ago, she was the victim of a homophobic attack on Barra da Tijuca beach, in Rio de Janeiro. The delegate who handled the case, Adriana Belém, ruled out that this was the case. “We cannot admit that you use the police station, the state’s administrative machinery, and get here and lie,” said Belém at the time, stating that Eller could be indicted for slanderous denunciation.

Tribute at Alesp

On Thursday (19), Karol will be honored in a service at the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo (Alesp) in the afternoon. The influencer worked there as an advisor to congressman Paulo Mansur (PL), who publicized the tribute on social media.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), every day, 32 people commit suicide in Brazil. Today, CVV is one of the few services in Brasília where you can find help for free. Around 50 volunteers serve those in need 24 hours a day.
