French deputy that EU-Mercosur agreement will not be approved – 05/08/2023 – Panel

President of the Brazil-France friendship parliamentary group in the National Assembly of the European country, deputy Nicolas Dupont-Aignan told Brazilian parliamentarians last Friday (5) that the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union will not be approved without important changes in the chapter agricultural.
He hosted members of the Brazilian Chamber commission dealing with tax reform for lunch. The group was on an official mission to the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) to discuss the issue.
President of a small radical right-wing party and former candidate for president of France, Dupont-Aignan took the opportunity to criticize the use of “poison” by Brazilian farmers, in reference to pesticides. He said that European consumers do not eat food with toxic products, contrary to what South Americans would.
He also stated that the increase in the meat export quota for the bloc provided for in the agreement would harm local producers. According to Dupont-Aignan, French deputies who vote in favor of the agreement will have no chance of being re-elected.
In response, the deputies and a representative of the embassy said that the increase in the quota is small, equivalent to 100 grams per year per inhabitant, and refuted the statements about pesticides.
The declarations soured the atmosphere at lunch, at which there were seven Brazilian deputies, including the president of the tax reform commission, Reginaldo Lopes (PT-MG). “If the president of the Brazil-France friendship group acts like that, he imagines what the enmity group would do”, said deputy Marco Bertaiolli (PSD-SP).
The agreement between the two blocs was finalized during the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government, but has not yet been signed and endorsed by the respective Parliaments. The Europeans want to reopen discussions involving environmental issues, which is not accepted by the South Americans.
