‘Free from foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination’: Amapá can sell beef throughout Brazil and abroad – News of Brazil

With policies to encourage the productive sector and effectiveness in vaccination campaigns, Amapá had its territory certified as “free from foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination” by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farming (MAP).
The measure gives Amapá the autonomy and freedom to carry out the free transit and trade of cattle, pigs, small ruminants and buffaloes throughout Brazil and abroad, expanding markets and strengthening the economy through meat exports.
For the governor Clécio Luís, certification represents the commitment and strengthening of rural production in Amapá as one of the management goals.
“It is one of the most important news for livestock farming in Amapá. It is an achievement of years for our production sector, for livestock farmers. This was only possible because we went to Minister Carlos Fávaro, with Senator Davi and asked for support so that we could have this certification. The senator provided resources to restructure the entire Diagro and we later asked, during the 52nd Expofeira, for a reconsideration of our status. So a team came here to inspect it. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock also helped a lot. And thanks to this joint effort, we obtained this certification that represents freedom of transit and commercialization of our meat. We have now gained new horizons in this market”pointed out the governor.
The 2023 vaccination campaign, coordinated by the Agricultural Defense and Inspection Agency of the State of Amapá (Diagro), which started in October and ends on Saturday, the 30th, should be the last. From 2024, the state will be free from the obligation to vaccinate its herds as it has controlled the disease throughout the territory.
According to the superintendent of Agriculture and Livestock of Amapá, Samuel Sales, the state went to great lengths to improve vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease, being recognized after evaluations by the ministry.
“I followed the situation closely. We needed to move forward and governor Clécio Luís had this sensitivity. It’s just joy for the people of Amapá and for the ranchers who stand to gain a lot from this. The state is to be congratulated”, celebrates the superintendent.
The health status achieved by Amapá represents the consolidation in the national meat and cattle market, in addition to making the state’s border region a gateway to the European market, as reinforced by the senator David Alcolumbre.
“Today is a historic milestone. Now we will be able, once and for all, to be able to sell our meat to other states in Brazil and also abroad, encouraging the productive sector, as it means the opportunity that our ranchers will have to sell buffalo, cattle common to a fantastic consumer market that is the European Union from French Guiana, here on the border with the municipality of Oiapoque”he reinforced.
Even with the disease-free status, the CEO of Diagro, Álvaro Cavalcante, reinforces that the institution will continue with policies that aim to guarantee the protection and immunity of the Amapá herd and the maintenance of the certificate.
“Diagro must work to create and maintain sustainable conditions to guarantee the status of free from foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination, protecting the state’s livestock heritage and generating maximum benefits for the actors involved and the society of Amapá”reinforces.
Proof of vaccination
Producers who do not present proof of vaccination to Diagro by January 15th will be unable to transport and sell the animals. In addition, they will be included in the Agency’s defaulter registry and subject to a fine.
To obtain the declaration document, the livestock farmer simply needs to go to Diagro service stations with the vaccination guides so that the information can later be included in the general campaign data.
