The French Football Federation (FFF) announced on Thursday (9) that Corinne Diacre is no longer coach of the women’s national team. The decision comes after some of the best players in the country refused to defend the team four months before the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Diacre, 48, had been in charge since 2017 and had a contract until the 2024 Paris Olympics but was under pressure after the departure of captain Wendie Renard and fellow international stars Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Kadidiatou Diani who questioned its methods, though without mentioning it directly.
Meeting this Thursday in Paris with the interim president of the FFF, Philippe Diallo, the members of the executive committee of the federation decided to dismiss the coach, ending the criticism and controversy since she took over the team due to methods seen as authoritarian.
“A very important fracture was found with key players and a gap with the highest level requirements was clarified. It seems that the dysfunctions found, in this context, are irreversible”, argued the FFF on the decision to dismiss Diacre.
She leaves the command of the national team without having won titles, with fourth place in the 2019 World Cup, played in France, and in Euro 2022 as her most relevant results, despite the quality of her squad and the results of French clubs in the Champions League.
