A France will not allow its athletes to wear the Islamic veil during next year’s Paris Olympic Gamesdespite the International Olympic Committee (IOC) tolerating it, as reported this Tuesday by the Minister of Sports, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra.
“The representatives of our delegations and our teams will not wear the veil, out of respect for the secularism of our country”, said the minister in a statement to the public TV channel “France 3”.
Amélie acknowledged that this decision is contrary to IOC doctrine, which treats clothing as a cultural and not a religious aspect.
French law does not explicitly prohibit the use of the veil in sporting competitions, although it prohibits public representatives from wearing it in the exercise of their functions.
Each federation, managed as private entities, makes its own decisions regarding the veil.
Football and basketball federations prohibit it, while rugby, handball and tennis federations allow it under certain conditions.
