Fossils illegally removed from Araripe arrive in Brazil – 12/15/2023 – Science

Last Thursday (13), 998 fossils illegally removed from the Araripe basin, an archaeological site located on the borders of the states of Ceará, Pernambuco and Piauí, returned to the country.

The announcement was made this Friday morning (15) by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Science, Technology and Innovation.

In the note, the folders state that the “restituted set houses valuable paleontological collections from the Araripe Geopark region”. Since 2006, the Araripe region has been included in the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) list of global geoparks.

The return comes more than a year after a handover ceremony in the port of Le Havre, Normandy.

Among the fossils are fish, dinosaur remains, turtles, as well as crustaceans, insects and fossilized vegetables. They date back to the Cretaceous period, 144 million to 65 million years ago.

The set of fossils was found in 2013 by French Customs officials at the port. The items were placed in barrels as if they were common goods.

The case ended up in court and, in 2021, the Lyon Public Prosecutor’s Office ordered the return to Brazil.
