Former secretary of Cracolândia de Nunes resigns – 06/15/2023 – Panel

Responsible for leading the actions of the Ricardo Nunes (MDB) management in Cracolândia in the last year, Alexis Vargas decided to leave the municipal administration this Thursday (15). On Wednesday (14), he had been removed from the position of secretary of Special Projects and passed to the deputy executive secretary of the Municipal Government.
According to the Panel’s findings, he did not accept the change, which in practice meant a demotion, and resigned. In the new position, he would share with Edsom Ortega, the new secretary of Special Projects, the work in cracolândia: Ortega would lead the janitorial and security part, while Vargas would be responsible for the reception and treatment of the population.
Vargas’ departure took place after tension with the Secretary of Government, Edson Aparecido, who has centralized political articulation in the city hall and who was one of the proponents of the new model of action in cracolândia.
Vargas was part of a group in municipal management that defends more humanized approaches in the treatment of drug users, also composed of Carlos Bezerra (Social Assistance) and Soninha Francine (Human Rights and Citizenship).
Internally, there is a fear of the strengthening of a more repressive vision, represented by figures such as Colonel Camilo (sub-prefect of the Cathedral) and Ortega himself, who, as the Sheetprohibited the distribution of soups and lunchboxes to homeless people in the central region of São Paulo when he commanded the Urban Security portfolio in the administration of former mayor Gilberto Kassab (PSD), in 2012.
