The soccer coach and former defender, Antônio Carlos Zago, is being investigated by the Civil Police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office of São Paulo on suspicion of procedural fraud, falsification of documents and ideological falsehood in processes that reach up to R$ 10 million.
The MP requested that an expertise be carried out on a series of documents related to the case, which has been open since 2020.
The prosecutor in the case, Silvia Marques, says that there are steps to be taken, witnesses to be heard, as well as an analysis of the documents to check whether the signatures are false or whether there are signs of fraud.
The former player has been facing a series of legal problems, with debts that reach R$ 40 million.
In 2022, the Public Prosecutor’s Office denied a request by Zago’s defense to file the case and determined that pending steps should be taken to complete the police investigation.
Still in 2022, Zago had several personal assets pledged, such as trophies, shirts and streamers from the time he played, in addition to furniture, motorcycles and other objects. Among the items taken from the former defender is a Silver Ball, awarded by Revista Placar, won by him in the 1993 Brazilian Championship, when he was playing for Palmeiras.
