Former GSI chief was punished with 30 days in prison in 1975 – 04/25/2023 – Panel

General Gonçalves Dias, who asked for removal from the command of the GSI (Institutional Security Office) after the dissemination of his images at the Planalto Palace on January 8, received a sentence of 30 days in prison when he was a cadet at Aman (Military Academy das Agulhas Negras), in 1975. The accusation was that he “cheated” on exams at the institution.

The punishment took place at the end of that year, a few days before the graduation ceremony at the academy, which trains Army officers.

GDias, as he is known, was not the only one found guilty of the offense at the time. Nine other cadets received the same sentence, and three more were expelled for participating in the exam fraud scheme.

“Cadet number 871, from the 1th Infantry Course Company, Marco Edson Gonçalves Dias, for having committed acts against honor and pride [decoro] military individual, demonstrably using illicit means in carrying out a verification for judgment, is arrested for 30 days”, says the result of the investigation on the case, dated November 26, 1975″.

According to a colleague of G.Dias at Aman, imprisonment was an intermediate sanction, milder than expulsion. It didn’t exactly mean imprisonment, but a restriction on movement within the academy. He still graduated that year.

When contacted by the Panel, General Gonçalves Dias declined to comment.
