Former state deputy in São Paulo for eight terms, Campos Machado wants to fill the void that will soon be left by the disappearance of the PTB.
The legend, which emerged in the 1940s as a vehicle linked to Getúlio Vargas and recreated in the final phase of the military dictatorship, in 1979, should be extinguished in the coming months, after a merger with Patriota.
Historical PTE leader in the state of São Paulo, Machado left the caption in 2021 after disagreements with the then commander of the party, former deputy Roberto Jefferson.
In April of this year, he created the SP Frente Cidadã, a non-partisan group to “bring together workers, not only in São Paulo, but also throughout the country”. The vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin, is the entity’s president emeritus, and attended its launch.
According to Machado, around 5,000 state leaders have already joined the movement. “The PTB, even on the verge of being extinguished, did not leave the hearts of workers in the state and in the country”, he says.
