Former state deputy Campos Machado, who failed to be re-elected to the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo in 2022 after eight consecutive terms, has held meetings with allied mayors and councilors to convince them to join the PSD, a party founded and chaired by Gilbert Kassab.
This Tuesday (28), Machado publicly announced the affiliations of mayors Maria Helena Rettondini, from Monte Alto, and Isnar Freschi, from Sarutaiá.
“Kassab is a great friend and brother, and that’s why I talked to two of the mayors who were by my side, in my old party, so that they could follow their political career alongside him,” said Machado, who is also joining the PSD.
The former deputy was for decades the main leader of the PTB in São Paulo, but left the party in 2020 due to a fight with the then president of the party, Roberto Jefferson. He ran in last year’s election for Avante.
The former parliamentarian attributes his defeat to the disorganization of the party he was trying to structure in São Paulo. Divided between campaign and acronym demands, Machado had difficulties on both fronts. In the PSD, he must have a structured caption to try to seek new mandates.
With Kassab as government secretary for Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), São Paulo politicians are betting on a significant growth of the PSD, advancing mainly over PSDB mayors, who ceased to command the state machine after almost 30 years.
In turn, Kassab has said that he will not deal with any partisan matter at the Bandeirantes Palace.
