Now champion of America, Fluminense could try to become world champion as well. The Libertadores title, won this Saturday (4), after victory over Boca Juniors at Maracanã, places the tricolor team in the FIFA Club World Cup, which will be played in December.
Alongside Fluminense, champions from other continental leagues will participate in the championship in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. They are classified:
- Urawa Red Diamonds (JAP): Asian Champions League 2022
- Al Ahly (EGI): African Champions League 2022/23
- León (MEX): Concacaf Champions League 2022/23
- Auckland City (NZL): OFC Champions League 2023
- Manchester City (ENG): UEFA Champions League 2022/23
- Al Ittihad (SAU): champion of the Saudi Pro League 2022/23
- Fluminense: Copa Libertadores 2023 Champion
The Rio team will start in the semi-finals and face the winner of the clash between Al Ahly and whoever passes the first round, between Al Itihad and Auckland City. If they overcome this stage, Fernando Diniz’s men could face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City team in the final.
Tricolor is the tenth Brazilian club to participate in the World Cup and already has a guaranteed place in 2025, when a new format for the tournament debuts, with 32 teams, to be played in the United States. Palmeiras (Libertadores champion and runner-up in the World Cup in 2021) and Flamengo (Libertadores champion and third place in the World Cup in 2022) are also already classified. There is still no decision on the 2024 format.
In addition to the FIFA tournament, Fluminense will have the chance for a rematch against LDU de Quito. The Copa Sudamericana champions, crowned last week, are the opponents of the Libertadores title holders in the Recopa Sul-Americana, from Conmebol (South American Football Confederation). In 2008, the two teams competed in the Libertadores final, with the Ecuadorians coming out on top.
Another international tournament could enter the Laranjeiras club’s agenda in 2024. At the beginning of 2023, Conmebol announced, alongside its North American analogue, Concacaf, that it was studying the creation of a new cup, to be played between the tournament winners from both regions. If it comes to fruition, the championship could bring together Fluminense and Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, Leagues Cup champion.
The victory in the Libertadores also places Fluminense in the next edition of the South American tournament.
