Flamengo x Vasco: fans are injured in a fight – 05/03/2023 – Sport

At least eight people were injured after generalized fights between organized supporters of Flamengo and Vasco da Gama in the surroundings of the Maracanã stadium, in the north zone of Rio de Janeiro, this Sunday afternoon (5).

The Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital, in the center, reported that eight fans related to the clashes were admitted to the unit, two in serious condition. The other six are being evaluated, but their cases are not givens.

Two of these men were taken away by the Fire Department, which said it had been called at 4:45 pm to attend to victims of aggression on Rua Almirante Baltazar, in São Cristóvão, about 1 km from the stadium.

The game started at 6:10 pm and ended with a 1-0 victory for Vasco, in the tenth round of the Carioca Championship.

The Military Police, responsible for security at the match, stated that there was also an intense fight on Avenida Pedro 2º, approximately 3 km from the stadium, where individuals were allegedly trying to attack the police team and vandalizing the vehicle.

Agents from the UPP Mangueira (Pacifying Police Unit) requested assistance from other battalion teams in the region. The corporation claims to have found two injured people: one there and the other on Rua Almirante Baltazar, who were taken to the private hospital Quinta D’Or.

The aggressors fled when the police arrived, but one of them was arrested and taken to the 17th police station (São Cristóvão), according to preliminary information.

As none of the injured were identified until the publication of this report, it is not possible to know if these are the same people informed by the firefighters and by the Souza Aguiar hospital.

A video circulating on social media shows a naked and unconscious man on the sidewalk, as the police approach. The image is filmed by a fan, who claims to be from “Jovem” and boasts about the attacks with profanity (both teams have fans with that name). The PM did not confirm whether the video is from this Sunday.

Other recordings and photos show crowds around Quinta da Boa Vista, fans carrying sticks and attempts by the Military Police to break up the fight with tear gas and rubber bullets.

MetrôRio reported that the São Cristóvão station had to be closed for about ten minutes because of the confrontation in the surroundings.
