Ecuador’s Independiente del Valle won the Recopa Sudamericana for the first time by beating Flamengo 5-4 on penalties this Tuesday (28), at Maracanã, in Rio de Janeiro, in yet another defeat at the beginning of 2023 for the team commanded by the Portuguese Vítor Pereira.
The “Matagigantes” lived up to their nickname against one of the most powerful teams in America, which squandered their third chance at the title of the year, largely due to their mistakes in the first half.
The Uruguayan Arrascaeta, 45 seconds from the end of the match (90’+6), scored the goal that took the decision to extra time (the Ecuadorians won the first leg by 1-0), in which equality was maintained.
In the penalty shootout, goalkeeper Moisés Ramírez saved Arrascaeta’s charge and gave Del Valle the victory, which had 100% success.
Independiente del Valle now joins the LDU as the only representatives of Ecuador to win the tournament that puts the champion of Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana face to face.
More than 70,000 fans followed the match at Maracanã. The greatest idol of the Flamengo fans, Zico was honored for his 70 years in the warm-up of the match with a video on the screen. The former player’s birthday will be on Friday (3).
Zico also received a plaque from the club’s president, Rodolfo Landim.
