“Fiscal target does not depend solely on the president’s desire”, says Haddad

The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad (PT), said this Monday (6) that the fiscal target “does not depend on the desire of the President of the Republic” or the economic team, but stated that it is “partnership work” .

“I don’t say this to provoke anyone. I say this because the fiscal result is not in the mind of the Minister of Finance nor the desire of the President of the Republic. Fiscal results are a work of partnership”, said Haddad during an event organized by the bank BTG Pactual , in Sao Paulo.

Haddad also defended harmony between the Powers to achieve the objective of bringing the fiscal deficit to zero next year. “The Judiciary has to understand the repercussions of its decisions, the Legislature has to understand the repercussions of its decisions and the Executive has to understand the repercussions of its decisions,” she said.

The minister’s statement comes amid the government’s negotiations with the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the National Congress, to approve measures to increase revenue, with the aim of making the goal of zeroing the fiscal deficit in 2024 viable. “We are doing the right thing from a fiscal point of view”, declared Haddad.
