First Forest School in AM will be delivered in 2024

Initiative aims to promote socio-environmental sustainability in teaching units by strengthening environmental education actions in Conservation Units (CUs)

Manaus (AM) – In 2023, the Government of Amazonas began construction of the first Escola da Floresta unit, located in the Uatumã Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS), in São Sebastião do Uatumã, in the interior of the state. With investments of approximately R$5 million, the works are almost 50% complete and the new school unit is scheduled to be delivered in 2024.

The Uatumã RDS unit is located in the Bom Jesus do Angelim community, where more than 20 families live from sustainable agriculture. The project aims to promote sustainability and socio-environmental actions in teaching units by strengthening UCs.

According to Governor Wilson Lima, forest schools were designed to have a low environmental impact.

“The forest schools are being built based on a sustainable model, using wood from sustainable forest management and also wood that has been confiscated from illegal extraction activities. The pedagogical contents of these schools seek to promote socio-environmental sustainability, the preservation of natural resources, such as fauna, flora, soil and water resources in a socially fair and economically viable way”,

said Governor Wilson Lima.

The Secretary of State for Education and School Sports, Kuka Chaves, highlighted the progress of the works and how significant the project of the first Forest School in the State is.

“We have passed the foundation process and now we have reached the finalization of the structuring. Governor Wilson Lima, in 2023, kicked off this project, a pioneering initiative, a reflection of management committed to the environment and the future of our students”,

said secretary Kuka Chaves.

The choice of UCs aims to strengthen environmental education and transform teaching units into spaces of democratic management, respecting sociocultural diversity and human rights.

The entire model was designed to have a low environmental impact, with a Sewage Treatment Station (ETE), solar energy collection panels, rainwater collection system, use of wood from sustainable forestry management, natural ventilation system, large accessibility, modular style (can be expanded) and easy maintenance.

The teaching unit will have classrooms, a reading room, a multipurpose room, a cafeteria, a teachers’ room, accommodation for educators and students, a robotics laboratory (Maker Space), as well as bathrooms and other school structures, such as a secretariat, pantry , kitchen and storage.
