In the three months of 2024, the National Electric Energy Agency has already applied R$246 million in penalties. Sanctions are not necessarily for infractions committed this year. Copan, in the center of SP, is hit by the blackout. Reproduction/ TV Globo The fines applied to energy distributors by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) in 2024 are already almost double the penalties for the entire year 2023. The information comes from the agency’s general director, Sandoval Feitosa. This year, R$246 million in fines have already been applied, compared to R$128 million over the 12 months of 2023, according to data from Aneel. Penalties refer to failures in the provision of energy services. “Aneel has established results plans to seek better results from companies. As these results are not coming, the fines applied have been greater, exactly from the perspective that the service has improved, it has improved from 2020 onwards, but the charges remain on the consumer”, said Feitosa, in an interview with g1. The fines imposed in 2024 are not necessarily for infractions committed in the year. The best-known example of this is the fine of R$165.8 million applied to Enel SP in February this year due to the blackout on November 3, 2023. “In the discussion of renewing concessions, we may have to add one more the quality component as an important component from the perspective of the electricity consumer”, he reinforced. Supply interruptions in SP Neighborhoods in the center of São Paulo remain in the dark this Friday (22), after an interruption in energy supply in the Enel SP concession area. It’s the third drop this week. SP: Fines against Enel total R$ 321.6 million According to the company, the lack of energy is due to the rupture of underground cables during a service carried out by the Basic Sanitation Company of the State of São Paulo (Sabesp). “Disconnect three high load density underground network circuits [demanda] It doesn’t recover very quickly. So we have to see who was responsible at the origin and we have to check what failed to recover the service”, said Feitosa. The general director of Aneel stated that the incident in São Paulo is different from the blackout in November last year , when more than 4 million consumers were left without power. “This last event, when comparing the two, turned off around 50 thousand consumers. But yes, it was in a critical region in the capital, a region with many relevant consumers, hospitals, shopping centers, so there is a very big impact”, he said. Nunes says his ‘hands are tied’ in relation to Enel: ‘I can’t fine it, I can’t get her out of here’ According to Feitosa, Aneel is investigating the causes with the Public Services Regulatory Agency of the State of São Paulo (Arsesp). Chronology of electrical power failures Arte/g1 Ministry requests investigation In a note published on Tuesday (19), the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, stated that he sent a letter to Aneel asking for “a quick and rigid investigation of the facts, as well as accountability and strict punishment of the concessionaire”. According to Silveira, the lack of light in the state “adds to several other failures in the provision of electricity services by the concessionaire Enel SP”, which according to Silveira has demonstrated “inability to provide quality services to the population”. The ministry’s dissatisfaction comes at a time when the government discusses the terms of renewing energy distribution concessions. Enel SP’s contract expires in 2028 and can be extended.
