The journey of the Women’s World Cup this Monday (31) features games from the third round of groups B and C. The confrontation between Japan and Spain, teams already classified in group C, defines which of the teams will face the selections of Switzerland and Norway in the Round of 16.

In this stage, the games of each group occur simultaneously. Group C matches take place at 4am in the Brazilian morning. For Group B, the matches between Canada and Australia and Ireland and Nigeria start at 7 am.

With two consecutive victories, against Costa Rica and Zambia, the two teams already have a guaranteed place in the round of 16. The dispute between the teams will define which selection each one will face in the next phase. The best-placed team will face Norway, second in Group A. The one that finishes second in the group stage will play against Switzerland in the knockout round.

Spain have the current best in the world Alexia Putellas, 32, who, in search of the best physical shape, was on the bench for most of the team’s first game, against Costa Rica, but returned to the starting lineup in the dispute against Zambia.

Neither team had championship wins. They no longer have a chance of moving on to the round of 16. The short participation of the teams, in the group that includes the Japanese and Spanish selections, was already expected.

This is Zambia’s first participation in the World Cup. Costa Rica plays in the tournament for the second time. The African team has striker Barbra Banda, 23, who was one of the highlights of the Tokyo Olympics.

The dispute between Canada and Australia can define which of the teams goes to the round of 16. The dispute is still open and also depends on the result of the clash between Ireland and Nigeria, leader of the group.

The Canadian team drew with Nigeria in the first round and beat Ireland 2-1 in the second. Australia, who also won the Europeans in their opening game, are coming off a defeat by Nigeria in their most recent match.

None of the teams has titles at the World Cup, but the Canadians were Olympic champions in the last edition of the Games, held in 2021. The group matches have been balanced so far.

Not even a victory against Nigeria can take the Irish to the next stage of the World Cup. The team accumulated two defeats in the opening games and is already out of contention. As for the Nigerians, who lead group B, a draw may be enough to guarantee classification.

The African team debuted in the Cup with a goalless draw against Canada and won a balanced victory over Australia in the last game.
