Fighters from the Brazilian boxing team travel to Bulgaria for training

As usual, part of the permanent Olympic team will spend Carnival in Bulgaria. A group of 12 boxers, in addition to members of the coaching staff, left last Tuesday (7th) for Sofia, Bulgaria. There, the team will do a training camp, already focusing on the 2023 World Championships, and will also participate in the traditional Strandja Tournament.

“After four weeks of preparation, the Olympic team leaves for this training camp in Bulgaria. This period will already be the training base for the Women’s World Cup that will be in March and will also serve to prepare the men’s athletes for their World Cup which will be in May”, explained Mateus Alves, head coach of the permanent Olympic boxing team.

Knowing the Rivals

Participation in international camps and competitions is considered essential by the technical commission in Brazil in order to train Brazilian athletes and, at the same time, learn about the fighting style of other countries.

For Caroline “Naka” Almeida, bronze medalist at the 2022 Worlds, the experience will be good to meet possible opponents of this year’s Worlds.

“Last year we had more competitions in America. So this event in Bulgaria is going to be cool because most of the countries in Europe are going and I’m going to be able to face some girls who have a different boxing style. It’s going to be very advantageous because I’m going to get to the World Cup with that extra preparation and because I might face the girls there that I’m already going to face in Bulgaria”, commented the athlete.

As for world runner-up Keno Marley, both the training camp and the Strandja Tournament will be opportunities to adjust the details for the big competitions of the year.

“This base is now very important due to the level of competition we will have there. It is a very strong championship, with several traditional boxing nations and this is very good for our development. It will be good for us to gain pace and get to know our opponents. that’s why we can see our mistakes, to work on them in search of perfection”, said the athlete.
