FIFA sees Brazil shirt appropriated by extreme right – 01/31/2024 – Sport

A temporary exhibition at the FIFA Museum (International Football Federation), in Zurich, Switzerland, displays two Brazilian national team shirts with a description that links the yellow uniform to Brazilian politics.

The text says that the item was “appropriated by supporters of the far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro.” A photo of the sign with this description circulated on the internet this Wednesday (31).

The museum confirmed to Sheet the veracity of the image, informed that the exhibition called “Designing the Beautiful Game” — which explores how design has been used to develop football around the world — is temporary and added that “the descriptions of the objects mentioned are written and approved by the curators of the FIFA Museum”.

Regarding the reference to former president Jair Bolsonaro, the institution said it associated him with the term “extreme right” because that is how he is “described in different Brazilian media outlets”.

According to the museum, the shirts on display are part of the “identity” section of the exhibition, which shows how uniforms “can sometimes also be used as part of other initiatives within a broader society.”

The museum organization also stated that it sees the Brazilian team’s shirt “always and only as the symbol of the five-time world champion and a symbol of beautiful football in the world”.

When contacted by the report, the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) stated that it will not officially comment on the matter.

The two shirts of the Brazilian team will be on display at the FIFA museum until February 25th. The set consists of a white uniform, worn by the team in 2019, and another green and yellow one, without any star on the chest, worn by Djalma Santos in 1950. Next to the two pieces, there is text written in English, with the title ” Color and meaning”.

The exhibition also features photos, films and audio that show the story of how models evolved based on new technologies.
