Ferroviária and Corinthians draw in the first duel for the women’s Brazilian final – 09/07/2023 – Sport

Ferroviária and Corinthians were tied 0-0 in the first leg for the final of the 2023 Brazilian Women’s Championship, played this Thursday (7) at the Fonte Luminosa stadium, in Araraquara (SP).

The second and decisive clash is scheduled for this Sunday (10), starting at 4pm, at the Neo Química Arena, in São Paulo. In case of new equality, the cup will be decided on penalties. TV Globo and SporTV will show the confrontation.

The first half had Corinthians superior in ball possession and Ferroviária betting more on counterattacks, but with no clear chances of scoring for either team. The biggest scare for the home team came in the 25th minute, when goalkeeper Luciana played the wrong game and recovered in time to save a risky long-range shot by Vic Albuquerque.

In the complementary stage, the black and white team found the net, after striker Jheniffer received the ball in the area and got rid of the marking with a beautiful individual feint, in the 31st minute, but the goal was disallowed by the referee due to offside at the origin of the play.

“Everyone realized that we didn’t come looking for a draw. They did. Now it’s at our home, with a packed arena, and I think they will feel a little bit what it’s like to play there with the fans in our favor”, said the captain Corinthians Tamires on TV Globo.

“We tried to nullify their moves on the side and in the middle, and we managed to do it well. It’s completely open, and now we’re going there to seek the title at their home”, declared defender Luana, from the home team.

This first game of the final was attended by 9,899 fans and had income of R$129,600.

In the semifinal against Santos, Corinthians placed 8,398 people at Fazendinha. In last year’s decision, also played at the Neo Química Arena, the club broke the attendance record for the sport in South American football, with 41,070 present against Internacional.

The match at Fonte Luminosa featured the participation of 9 of the 30 players called up for the Brazilian team last week: Luciana and Eudimilla (Ferroviária); and Lelê, Tamires, Yasmin, Katiuscia, Duda Sampaio, Gabi Portilho and Jheniffer (Corinthians).

It was the first call-up after Brazil’s early elimination from the World Cup and the announcement of Arthur Elias, coach of the black and white team, as a replacement for Swedish Pia Sundhage in charge of the selection. In search of his fifth Brazilian title at the club, the coach will hold both positions until the end of the Copa Libertadores, to be played between October 5th and 21st.

The decision for the 2023 women’s Brazilian Championship puts the two main winners of the competition face to face.

The sport’s biggest champion, Corinthians is fighting for its fifth national trophy and its fourth consecutive championship. The two-time champion Ferroviária is looking for its third cup to shorten this distance and further isolate itself as the second most successful team in the competition.

The last few years have marked true black and white hegemony. Since 2018, only Ferroviária itself has managed to overcome the favoritism of its opponents and prevent Corinthians from winning, in a final decided on penalties after two draws, 1-1 in the first leg and 0-0 in the return.

The Parque São Jorge team lifted the cup in 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022, and the Araraquara team won the trophy in 2014 and 2019, in the only two finals it had played in so far.
