A CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) hit with Fernando Diniz for him to be the coach of the Brazilian National Team until June 2024. He will remain in charge of Fluminense and will reconcile the duties, participating in the Selection events on FIFA dates, when the championships stop. The idea of the CBF summit is that Diniz stays until the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti, who has a verbal agreement to command the Brazilian national team from the middle of next year, when his contract with Real Madrid-ESP ends.
At first, Diniz will not be part of the Italian’s coaching staff and will remain in charge of Fluminense until the end of 2024, when his agreement ends.
Diniz’s hit was endorsed by the leaders of the Brazilian national team, such as Casemiro, Neymar, Alisson, Marquinhos and Danilo. Some athletes even called Diniz directly in an attempt to encourage him to accept the project, even if it was for just one year.
The same group of players had already given the approval for the president of the CBF, Ednaldo Rodrigues, to wait a year for Ancelotti.
To friends, the Fluminense coach said that a call to the national team is a call-up. But the whole process was done with the participation of Fluminense and the coach was keen to stress that it would be possible to accumulate the functions. Something similar was done in 1998, with Vanderlei Luxemburgo, who reconciled his work at Corinthians and the national team.
In recent weeks, several names have been indicated to president Ednaldo Rodrigues to lead the national team until the possible arrival of Ancelotti, such as Mauricio Barbieri, former coach of Vasco. The manager, however, wanted someone more experienced, who can make the transition without pressure.
There is a second aspect that meets the needs of someone with Diniz’s profile: there is a verbal agreement with Ancelotti, but nothing signed. Having a reputable coach in charge is ideal if you need to continue the work if the agreement with the Italian is not signed on paper.
It is not yet known whether Diniz would lead the team in the 2024 Copa America, which will take place in the United States between June 20 and July 14. Ancelotti’s contract with Real Madrid expires on June 30. Therefore, if the Spaniards do not release him earlier, the Italian will not be able to lead the team in the tournament.
The problem is that it is not yet known whether the Brazilian football calendar will stop during the Copa America next year. If not, Diniz would have commitments with Fluminense.
The coach will lead Brazil in six games for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers (which will take place in the United States, Mexico and Canada), between September and November 2023, and in two friendlies, both in March 2024 — one of them already is confirmed and will be against Spain.
