Federations want to change law to protect themselves from challenge – 08/19/2023 – Panel

Leaders of the three party federations that exist today intend to present a joint proposal to modify the electoral law, so that it will be more difficult to challenge candidacies in next year’s municipal elections.

A meeting last Wednesday (16) was attended by representatives of the PT-PCdoB-PV, PSOL-Rede and PSDB-Cidadania federations.

The main topic under discussion was the fact that the law is silent on the responsibility of candidacies from the federation for accounting problems of one of its members.

“The federations are united in politics, but remain autonomous in terms of accountability. Our understanding is that accounting problems of a member party cannot lead to the punishment of the others”, says the secretary of Finance of the PT, Gleide Andrade.

A concrete case occurred recently in Brusque (SC), where a supplementary election is scheduled for September 3rd. A problem in the local PCdoB led to legal questioning of the candidacy headed by the PT.

The federations decided to create a working group in 15 days to present a bill that preserves the federations in cases like this. The matter would need to be approved by October 6, a year before the 2024 election.

Other points may be included in the project. One of them simplifies accountability procedures for directories in small municipalities, which practically do not move resources or have affiliates. Without structure, they end up being punished for failing to comply with a series of legal formalities.

Gleide also defends that the law clearly establishes the proportion of electoral fund resources that must be destined to majority and proportional candidacies. Today, the decision is up to each party, which opens up room to favor the subtitle summits.
