Federal government sends observers to the largest jury of PMs since 1996 – 06/24/2023 – Panel

The federal government sent two external observers to follow the trial of police officers involved in the Curió massacre, in Fortaleza (CE), which began on Tuesday (20).

With 34 denounced, it is one of the largest involving military personnel since the Eldorado dos Carajás massacre, in 1996, according to the state Public Defender’s Office.

In 2015, military police promoted a night of killings in neighborhoods of Grande Messejana, in the south of the capital of Ceará.

Eleven people were murdered, in addition to three who suffered attempted murder and four victims of torture.

The Public Ministry of Ceará denounced 45 members of the security force. Ten later had their charges dropped for lack of sufficient evidence, and one died.

As the processes were dismembered, there will be three trials, which, in the end, will analyze the conduct of 20 people involved in the slaughter. The other two juries are scheduled for August 29 and September 12.

The number may increase given that others are also defendants, but will not be judged at this time as they await appeals in higher courts.

The observers sent by the federal government are the coordinator of the Committee to Prevent and Combat Torture, Fernanda Oliveira, and the Human Rights Ombudsman, Bruno Renato Teixeira, both linked to the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship.

According to professionals accompanying the case, the presence of observers aims to legitimize the fight for human rights, led by the mothers of the victims, and also to assess the need to expand external controls of police activity with the aim of reducing institutional violence.

The jury is expected to continue at least until Saturday (24).
