A group of farmers managed to reach an agreement so that 45 members of the Landless Workers Movement (MST) would not occupy the Ouro Verde Farm, in Santa Luzia, Bahia, early this Sunday (5). The occupants tried to invade the farm for the first time last Saturday (4).

One of the representatives of these landowners, Gunther Baldi, said that the MST group invaded the farm on Saturday, but the heavy rain prevented the landless from setting up a camp there. On Sunday, when they returned using a Camacã (BA) bus, the farmers intercepted the group and peacefully closed an agreement.
Baldi reported that, after the first attempted attack, farmers in the region got together to try to resolve the problem without violence. The farm is not owned by Brazilians, but by the French, according to Baldi.
He also reported that many of the invaders “had already benefited from the agrarian reform, but they were there to build volume, to invade a very productive land”. The farm has approximately 1000 hectares, with areas for livestock, production of black pepper, coffee and cocoa for export.
Baldi pointed out that these invasions in the region are very frequent. “We are setting up a group to strengthen rural producers in the region against invasions. In the region, there is a lot of this because we have a left-wing state government,” he said.
The 62nd Independent Company of Military Police also confirmed that there was no conflict between the parties and the negotiation was between the landowners and the MST group. The report got in touch with the MST advisory, but has not had a response, so far.
