The authorities met at the Planalto Palace, in Brasília, to discuss ways to reinforce security in the school environment after the episodes of violence in Blumenau (SC) and São Paulo (SP) in recent days. “The so-called platforms, the so-called big companies that make money from the dissemination of violence, are getting richer and richer. Some are the richest employees on planet earth and continue to spread any lie. There is no criteria,” declared Lula. “Either we have the courage to discuss the difference between freedom of expression and stupidity, or we won’t get very far. Or we take into account the need to educate parents… Because the family has to be involved in this process, it has to take responsibility and help the school”, he continued, in another moment of the speech. Throughout the speech, Lula also said he believed that the guarantee of peace in schools would not be done only with public safety measures, such as metal detectors or the presence of a school guard. “We are not going to solve this problem with money alone, raising the school wall and installing metal detectors. I keep imagining children being searched at the school doors, how pathetic it would be for parents, for the mayor, for the governor, for the President of the Republic and for the institutions of that country. An 8-year-old child having to show his backpack,” said Lula. “We are not going to turn our schools into a maximum security prison, which has no solution. There is no money for that, nor is it politically correct, humanly correct, socially correct. If we try to do that, we are giving a demonstration of that we are not good for much, because we don’t know how to solve the real problem”, he declared.
