Drink can be beneficial to health, however, depending on how it is consumed, the effect is opposite
Coffee is the second most consumed beverage by Brazilians, behind only water.
Over the years, the drink has been associated with health benefits. The Doctor. Roberto Kalil denied the belief and stated that moderate intake of caffeine is not harmful to health.
“An adult without a health problem can consume up to four cups of filtered coffee per day. The equivalent of a maximum of 400 mg of caffeine.”
says Robert.
The benefits of coffee for the intestine
Gastrosurgeon and endoscopist Eduardo Grecco explained that moderate consumption of caffeine has two benefits for the intestine:
- it helps in the improvement of the bacteria that are in the intestine, that is, it improves the functioning of the intestinal flora
- it is a relaxant of the intestinal muscles, helping patients with constipation
Therefore, drinking coffee can be beneficial for health. However, depending on how it is consumed, the effect is the opposite.
The harm of coffee for the intestine
Grecco explained that the drink is a gastric irritant, especially if consumed on an empty stomach.
“Caffeine can be aggressive to the stomach, so the ideal thing is that you don’t drink coffee with it empty. On an empty stomach, the drink goes straight to the mucosa and harms it”,
pointed.
The mucosa is the membrane that lines the inner wall of the stomach and produces an alkaline mucus that prevents the digestive enzymes and hydrochloric acid, which form the gastric juice, from affecting the organ.
“Our stomach has gastric juice, so it is an acidic environment. Caffeine increases this acidity, producing a more acidic secretion, but without food, without the product to be digested – that is the problem. Drinking coffee with food in the stomach, he is protected.”
Grecco said.
According to the gastrosurgeon, the consumption of caffeine on an empty stomach can lead to gastritis – inflammation in the lining of the stomach, which can be acute or chronic.
