If it depended on the will of serious people from the government and the opposition, the joint congressional commission for the alleged verification of the facts already investigated in inquiries about January 8th would go up to the roof and remain there in eternal rest. The ill will is evident.

If it is impossible to retreat, the commission will be installed along with three others (MST, fraud in football and Americanas betting) created in the Chamber and one more (abuse of authority) proposed in the House commanded by Arthur Lira.

No government likes CPI, let alone four, perhaps five. They are instruments of the minority —usually the residence of oppositionists— and, therefore, carry the potential to cause harm to current power holders.

The problem is not only in the unpredictability of the outcomes, but also, sometimes mainly, in the direction of the works and the uses that will be made of them.

There are countless examples in Parliament of committees created only to serve special interests. Bartering chips that, as it turns out, will depend on the success or failure of the barter operators and the strength of the lobbies.

Hence the usual effort to avoid them. Hence also the strangeness with the mixture of ineptitude and inertia of Lula’s allies (the faithful, it should be said) in removing such an obstacle from the way.

Even worn down by the nefarious treatment of the pandemic, Jair Bolsonaro postponed it and was only unable to take the Covid CPI from the water bath to the archive because the Federal Supreme Court forced the President of the Senate to stop pretending to be ignorant and read the installation application.

In less than five months, Luiz Inácio da Silva has already found himself under siege by the CPIs and under the complacent gaze of the rank and file. Respect for the minority? They suspect that there may be less interest in investigating than in watching for the right time to blackmail.
