Ex-Athletico and currently at América-MG, the right-back Marcinho was sentenced to three years and six months in prison on an open basis, for the manslaughter of a couple of teachers, in 2020, when he was playing for Botafogo. The penalty will be converted into the provision of social services.
The crime took place in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, when Marcinho hit the couple on Avenida Sernambetida and fled without providing help. According to the investigation of the case, the player abandoned the vehicle about 600 meters from the accident site.
Marcinho’s conviction was signed by Judge Rudi Baldi Loewenkoron, from the 34th Criminal Court of the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice. The player also had his driver’s license suspended for the same period of sentence.
Still according to the TJ-RJ, Marcinho consumed alcoholic beverages on the day of the crime and the forensics pointed out that the car was at high speed.
The report also points out that pedestrians were crossing the road in the wrong place. The vehicle would be between 86 km/h and 110 km/h on a road with a maximum speed of 70 km/h.
Due to the fact that the sentence was less than four years, among other requirements of the Penal Code, Justice replaced the sentence of deprivation of liberty with the provision of social services.
Remember Marcinho’s controversial passage through Athletico
The side arrived at Hurricane in a controversial way in 2021 and generated criticism from sectors of the Red-Black crowd. In all, Marcinho played 57 games for Athletico and won the Copa Sudamericana that year.
The 25-year-old player was removed from the club by decision of president Mario Celso Petraglia, after committing a penalty in the added time of the match against Palmeiras, in the first game of the Recopa Sul-Americana, at Arena da Baixada.
Despite being defended by teammates, he was harassed by the crowd, which already carried enormous resistance to his signing.
