Even with high-priced air tickets, Brazilians are traveling more and more. According to experts, those on a tighter budget take shorter and closer trips, but don’t stop traveling. However, those with a little extra money tend to choose national destinations over resorts or international trips.

Given this movement, tourism is expected to earn R$155.87 billion in the high season. This is the biggest financial movement in the sector since 2012, when research by the National Confederation of Commerce in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC) began. The value refers to the months of November 2023 to February 2024.

The improvement in the economy and the increase in the number of passengers are responsible for the positive data. Fabio Bentes, economist at CNC, states that there is a pent-up demand for travel resulting from the pandemic, as tourism was one of the most affected sectors, and that a more stable economic scenario favors the sector’s growth.

“The price of air tickets is still a challenge for the sector. According to the IPCA, an index that measures the country’s official inflation, ticket prices rose 19.12% in November alone. In the last 12 months, the increase was 36.45% in tickets. Consumers have been looking for alternatives to travel without depending on the plane, such as private transport or buses”,

he stated.

“The alternative to tickets is road transport, bus lines, and private transport, which have grown. This has overcome the consumer’s difficulty in dealing with the high price of air tickets”, highlighted Fábio Bentes, senior economist at CNC.

André Coelho, project coordinator at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), points out that families stopped spending on tourism during the pandemic, but gradually started traveling again.

“If the person doesn’t have much greater resources, they take a short trip, on the weekend. If she improved her resources, the economy stabilizes a little or she gets a better job, takes a longer trip. Tourism is always, in some way, part of people’s consumption basket”,
