Even if PL reaches the presidency of the Chamber, Bolsonaro will not rule in Brazil, contrary to post – 12/18/2023 – Power

The allegations made by a man, in a video, that the former president of the Republic Jair Bolsonaro (PL) is no longer ineligible and that he “will start to rule Brazil” are false. The speech is based on a publication on the website O Antagonista that reflects a report from Sheet about the PL intending to enter the dispute for the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies, whose next election takes place in February 2025.

According to the disinformer, with the PL in the presidency of the Chamber and the right as the majority in the National Congress, Bolsonaro, honorary president of the party and a name that helped elect several deputies, would give the orders. The statements, as verified by Comprova, are exaggerated and have no basis in current reality.

According to the Chamber, its president “has as his main duties the general supervision of the institution’s work and the definition of the Plenary’s voting agenda.” As stated in article 80 of the Constitution, he is also second in line to the Presidency of the Republic, behind the vice-president — that is, when the president and vice-president are absent, he is the one who takes over. It is a powerful position, but whose action is limited by the other powers — the Executive and the Judiciary. Furthermore, the election mentioned in the content investigated will only take place at the beginning of 2025, which makes any type of prediction difficult.

The author of the post also misinforms, right at the beginning of the video, by suggesting that Bolsonaro is no longer ineligible. Two TSE decisions — one in June and another in October 2023 — declared him unable to run in elections for eight years, counting from last year’s election.

The first conviction was for abuse of political power and misuse of the media during a meeting held at the Palácio da Alvorada with foreign ambassadors in 2022. The second was for abuse of political and economic power in the celebrations of the Bicentenary of Independence, held on 7 September also last year.
