Kenyan Evans Chebet won the 127th edition of the Boston Marathon. Winner last year, he won the championship for the second time by crossing the finish line in 2h5min54. The podium was shared by Tanzanian Gabriel Geay and also Kenyan Benson Kipruto.
Chebet has won six of the last seven marathons he has run. He holds the eighth best marathon mark of all time — 2h3min recorded in Valencia (Spain) last year. In 2022, in addition to Boston, he also won the New York marathon.
Eliud Kipchoge, the best marathon runner of all time and favorite to win in Boston, couldn’t stand the strong pace of the front pack and lost contact with the leaders after 30 km of race. Kipchoge finished the race in sixth place.
The Boston Marathon is the second oldest in the world. The first race was held in 1897, just one year after the historic race held in Athens, in 1896, in the first edition of the Olympic Games of the modern era. Despite this, Boston is considered the most traditional marathon because it has been held annually since then.
Because the starting and finishing points are separated by more than 21 km, and because it has a course with a slope of almost 150 meters (the official limit is 42 m), the Boston event does not comply with the rules of the World Athletics (former International Federation of Athletics) for the homologation of records.
