Evangelical bench criticizes Lula’s decisions that facilitate abortion

Parliamentarians from the Evangelical Front criticized the last actions of the management of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) that facilitate the practice of abortion in Brazil. The government announced this week that Brazil is no longer part of the international agreement of the Geneva Consensus, in defense of life from conception, women’s health, the strengthening of the family and the sovereignty of each nation in global politics. The agreement had been made in October 2020, in the government of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Health Minister Nísia Trindade also revoked the ordinance that required doctors to send information to police authorities in cases of abortion resulting from rape. With the repeal, it is again more difficult for crimes of rape to be investigated and punished. At the same time, it is easier for abortion to be practiced in cases not permitted by law, under false allegations of rape.

The president of the Evangelical Parliamentary Front, Deputy Sóstenes Cavalcante (PL), stated that it was evident that the abortion agenda would return to the center of the discussion of the PT government, even if on the eve of the 2nd round of the 2022 elections, Lula had changed the speech and said he was against abortion.

“The Evangelical Front will continue its struggle in parliament in defense of pro-life. He will never give up the first human right, the right to be born”, stressed Deputy Sóstenes Cavalcante (PL). He highlighted that the evangelical bench will face the ideological position of the current government.

Another deputy from the evangelical bench, Otoni de Paula (MDB), said that Brazil’s withdrawal from the Geneva Consensus was “regrettable”. However, he highlighted that now is the time to “confront these abortionist guidelines”. He also showed that “there is no room for negotiation on the evangelical parliamentary front in relation to these guidelines. [de aborto e ideologia de gênero]”.

Deputy Filipe Martins (PL), who is also a member of the bench, commented that, despite the decisions, it is up to parliament to debate the matter. He also regretted the position of the Minister of Women Aparecida Gonçalves of considering abortion a “public health issue”. “It is up to parliament to take a stand. We will have a healthy discussion on the subject in defense of life in any situation, ”he said.

CNBB and Abrajuc also manifested

In view of the latest events, the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) has expressed its disapproval of “any and all initiatives that signal the flexibility of abortion”. The CNBB also asked for clarification from the Federal Government “considering that the defense of the unborn child assumed in the campaign and also about Brazil’s disengagement from the Geneva Convention”.

The Brazilian Association of Conservative Jurists (Abrajuc), in a note published this Thursday (19), also repudiated the latest decisions related to the abortion agenda of the Lula government (PT).
