European Super League presents a new project, with more teams and no fixed vacancy; know details

The European Super League gained a new format this Thursday. The company A22, responsible for promoting the new competition, announced to the Spanish newspaper El País, the new project to create an alternative tournament with more teams and no fixed vacancy.

Originally, the European Super League would be made up of 20 fixed clubs — the 15 founders and five more that would qualify based on the previous season’s performance. However, Bernd Reichart, CEO of A22, presented the new project composed of 60 to 80 teams, several different divisions, no permanent teams and a minimum of 14 games per season.

According to the CEO, the qualification system should be open, based on performance in national competitions, thus allowing access for all clubs to the competition, maintaining competitive dynamics at the national level.

The idea of ​​the Superliga project is to replace the Champions League in practice. Furthermore, the charter clubs claim that the project lays a “sustainable foundation for the long-term future” in terms of finances. Another idea is to make football more attractive to fans, as the big teams face each other more often.

The first proposal was made in April 2021, when twelve major clubs on the continent decided to launch a competition in opposition to the UEFA Champions League. However, in just 48 hours half of the founders – Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea – announced their withdrawal, after enormous pressure, mainly from their fans. The tournament was suspended and the project is remodeled.

One of the principles of the project, presented by Bernd Reichart, is the clubs’ commitment to their respective national competitions, as they are today. And at the same time, the critical need to strengthen and make national tournaments more competitive across the continent must be addressed.
