Essay contest rewards students in Manaus

The essay contest, carried out at the national level, is open to re-educators from prison units and adolescents who are serving socio-educational measures.
Manaus (AM) – With the aim of encouraging studies and arousing interest in subjects related to education and citizenship, the State Department of Penitentiary Administration (Seap), together with the Federal Public Defender’s Office (DPU), awarded the 6th Contest DPU Editor – for Persons Deprived of Liberty at the Women’s Detention Center (CDF), at Km 08 of the BR-174 highway (Manaus-Itacoatiara).
The essay contest, held at the national level, is open to inmates from prison units and adolescents who are serving socio-educational measures. The contest winner was symbolically awarded a certificate of participation signed by the DPU and the National Penitentiary Department (Depen), attesting to the remission of 12 hours of sentence through reading and writing activities. The award refers to the 2020 public notice, which had been paralyzed due to the Covid-2019 pandemic.
For the deputy secretary of Seap, Major Wallasson Lira, these educational opportunities are valuable tools for the reeducated ones.
“Through these initiatives, we at Seap can see how education is liberating, because this process of re-socializing Persons Deprived of Liberty (PPLs) must go through the moment of rebuilding the lives of each one of them, and education is the beginning for all of this”, he pointed out.
According to Lieutenant Tales Renan, director of the School of Penitentiary Administration (Esap), competitions like this are of great significance, especially for PDLs.
“Initiatives like this should always be highlighted, because in addition to encouraging inmates to study and train themselves, they are exercising citizenship, showing that the textual production capacity of inmates is developed in the same way as extramural development”, he pointed out.
For the award-winning inmate, teaching within the units, in addition to being a determining factor in the resocialization process, is a transformation tool.
“After these education projects were created, not only me but several inmates were able to change their lives. Today I see the prison system as a school, where we receive qualifications and education, and more opportunities when leaving the system, ”she said.
