Eleven entities representing the main press vehicles in Brazil published a statement, this Tuesday (18), in defense of the approval of the fake news bill, which has been pending in Congress since 2020.
The text says that public interest journalism “is society’s main weapon to combat disinformation” and defines the possibility of remuneration for this activity by technology platforms as “a decisive element for the formation of a broad, diverse and healthy journalistic ecosystem , capable of counteracting the spread of misinformation and hate speech.”
On the other hand, the undersigned, entitled For the Valorization of Journalism, points to a concern with the attempt to deal in the bill with the issue of paying copyrights to cultural producers that have no direct relationship with the fight against misinformation.
“Due to its relevance, the payment of copyright by the so-called big techs to cultural producers demands a separate discussion, so that it can be duly debated and, in due course, accepted by the Brazilian Congress”, says the letter.
The text of the project, reported by deputy Orlando Silva (PC do B-SP), provides for remuneration for journalistic content by internet platforms along the lines of the News Media Bargaining Code adopted in Australia in 2021. If they do not reach an agreement, there will be arbitration.
The document is signed by the Brazilian Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters (Abert), National Association of Magazine Editors (Aner), National Association of Newspapers (ANJ), Association of Digital Journalism (Ajor), Brazilian Association of Digital Media (Abmd ), Pernambuco Press Association (AIP), São Paulo Newspaper Association (APJ), Riograndense Press Association (ARI), National Confederation of Social Communication (CNCOM), National Federation of Newspaper and Magazine Companies (Fenajore) and National Federation of Radio and Television Companies (Fenaert).
