England striker Lauren James has been banned for two matches at the Women’s World Cup. The punishment was announced this Thursday (10) by Fifa (International Football Federation), which considered as “unsportsmanlike attitude” the step she gave the Nigerian striker Michelle Alozie during the round of 16 game.
With the decision of the entity’s disciplinary committee, James will be out of the confrontation against Colombia for the quarterfinals, in Sydney, this Saturday (12), at 7:30 am (Brasília time), and of an eventual semifinal.
On Tuesday (8), the Englishwoman used her account on the social network X, formerly Twitter, to express regret for what happened in the duel with Nigeria. Alozie was already lying on the grass when James stepped on her back.
“All my love and respect to Michelle Alozie. I apologize for what happened,” wrote James. “I promise I will learn from this experience.”
The England team also released a statement in which it quotes that the athlete “regrets the athlete’s gesture.”
The English eliminated the Nigerians in the round of 16 with a victory on penalties after a goalless draw that dragged on in regulation time and overtime.
