Enem: Minister may have to explain long distances – 10/27/2023 – Education

The Minister of Education, Camilo Santana (PT), may be called to the Chamber to explain the problems reported by Enem registrants in relation to test locations. Students have complained that they were placed to take the test at great distances from home.

A request to summon the minister, filed this Friday (27), should be discussed in the Chamber’s Education Committee next Tuesday (31). The authorship is by deputy Sergeant Gonçalves (PL-RN), member of the commission. This is the first Enem carried out by the Lula (PT) administration.

The application addresses were released to those registered on Tuesday (24). The tests will be administered on the 5th and 12th of November.

Students report a distance of more than 40 km between their residence and the test location. There are reports of applicants considering giving up taking the exam, which is the main gateway to public higher education.

Enem is organized by Inep (National Institute of Educational Studies and Research), a body linked to the MEC (Ministry of Education).

In a statement, Inep informed that it is taking the necessary measures “to ensure that registered participants take the tests without complications”.

The agency did not explain whether it will change test locations.

According to the rules, candidates must be allocated to locations that are, at most, 30 km from home — there is a possibility that an allocation will be made to a neighboring city if the test is not administered in the candidate’s city.

“There are candidates who will have to travel more than 200km to take the tests, others will travel more than 2 hours to get to their test location, which is completely unacceptable”, says an excerpt from the application. Deputy Sergeant Gonçalves did not respond to the report’s contacts.

Parliamentarians have already reported these inconsistencies with the test locations to the government. Deputy Chico Alencar (PSOL-RJ) announced that he had notified the MEC and Inep about these distances.

As the Panel column showed, the Education Bench at the National Congress will ask the MEC for information about the organization and logistics of the tests. It also asks Inep to indicate how many students are in a similar situation and the relocation of test locations.

Inep stated in the same note that it supervises the work of Cebraspe (Brazilian Center for Research in Evaluation and Selection and Promotion of Events), the institution that won the bid for this year’s application and “works to ensure that the applicator adopts all measures that guarantee the rights of subscribers”.

According to Inep, the criteria for test locations follow the same criteria as in recent years.

The minister’s visit to the Chamber depends on the approval of this request. It is not in the interest of the MEC and the government for Camilo Santana to attend, but base parliamentarians heard by the Sheet consider that the application can prosper.

Enem is held on two Sundays. Gates open at 12pm and close at 1pm on both days. The tests start at 1:30 pm and end on the first day at 7:00 pm and on the second at 6:30 pm.

The reference time is Brasilia. The exam will have four objective tests — each with 45 questions — and an essay. To take your notebook home, you must leave during the last 30 minutes of the test.

On the first day, the Language tests will be administered — which includes Portuguese or Spanish depending on the candidate’s registration, Codes and their Technologies, Human Sciences and their Technologies and writing.

In the second, candidates take Natural Sciences and its Technologies and Mathematics and its Technologies.
